Your Spanish holiday: Island
getaways have never been easier

Spain is among the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. People love city trips to Barcelona, Madrid or Seville and areas on the coast like the Costa Brava, Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz attract many beach-loving Europeans from all over the continent.

The Spanish islands benefit from this trend as well and thanks to the ever-growing sector of budget airlines, it is cheaper than ever to get there. However, there’s more to see than the famous Balearic Islands. While Mallorca and its sister islands are certainly gorgeous spots to visit, the Canary Islands are true island dream destinations for any holiday maker looking for a slice of sun, sea and sand.

There are several airports and many direct connections available to the Canary Islands: Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), Lanzarote Airport (ACE), Tenerife South Airport (TFS) and Tenerife North Airport (TFN) can be reached easily from many European cities via airlines like British Airways (BA), Condor (DE), TUIfly (X3), Jet2 (LS), Eurowings (EW), Ryanair (FR) and easyJet (U2), to name but a few.

  • Tenerife – area: 2, 034 km²; Highest spot: Pico del Teide (3,718m)

  • Fuerteventura – area: 1, 660 km²; Highest spot: Pico de la Zarsa (807m)

  • Gran Canaria – area: 1, 560 km²; Highest spot: Pico de las Nieves (1, 950m)

  • Lanzarote – area: 845 km²; Highest spot: Peñas del Chache (671m)

  • La Palma – area: 708 km²; Highest spot: Roque de los Muchachos (2, 426 m)

  • La Gomera – area: 369 km²; Highest spot: Alto de Garajonay (1, 487m)

  • El Hierro – area: 268 km²; Highest spot: Pico Malpaso (1, 501m)

Which Canary Island should I visit?

Going to the Canary Islands is always great, but particularly beautiful during the winter – especially for the folks from Northern Europe. While at home it´s cold, grey and windy, the Canary Islands offer great weather conditions throughout the whole year. The reason for this is their far southern location to the west of Morocco's southern Atlantic coast. The eastern islands Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are famous as great beach holiday destinations. Those seeking to explore nature often favour Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro with their stunning vegetation. But every island offers far more than just sunbathing and chilling on the beach.

Explore Tenerife and Gran Canaria

All of these islands are of volcanic origin, with Tenerife being the one with the highest volcanic peak, Pico el Teide. This 3718-metre-high mountain boasts stunning hiking trails and views and you can take a spectacular cable car ride up to the top. Gran Canaria, on the other hand, has become famous as kind of a mini continent as it has a varied climate with an abundance of flora and fauna within its compact area. From sand dunes and rocky coasts, to rainforests with exotic plants, you can find everything there. Its botanical garden in Tafira Alta houses an incredibly diverse collection of interesting plants which nature-lovers will definitely enjoy.

El Hierro, the smallest Canary Island

El Hierro is also a lovely spot to visit. The main town, Valverde, has just 1500 inhabitants and those who go there love the relaxed atmosphere of this chilled-out place. For those spending their holidays on one of the other islands, a visit of one or two days to El Hierro is highly recommended. You can just take one of the many ferries that go there for quite reasonable prices.

Which month is coolest or hottest? Canary Island seasons

This totally depends on what kind of holiday you’re looking for, but whatever the season you’re pretty much guaranteed fantastic weather. As the Canary Islands are located in the south, right next to Morocco, many might think spending a summer there would be unbearably hot. But while the sun is indeed strong in July and August, relatively fresh Atlantic streams in that area guarantee a fairly balanced climate. As a result, temperatures are between 20°C and 30°C all year long and in winter time you can usually still hang out at the beach and sometimes even have a swim. In summer you won't overheat like in the south of Spain, where temperatures soar above 40°C. As in other tourist destinations, summer, therefore, is of course the busiest season in the Canary Islands. If you are not bound to school holidays and are flexible to travel at another time, this might be the better choice.

Trade in the cold and dark days of winter with sunshine and clear, blue sea. The lowest temperatures you will get at night are around 14°C and with only around six rainy days on average during winter months, you can definitely expect good weather.

Another great season for a trip to the Canary Islands is autumn. Temperatures are still around 25°C then and the sea is still hot from summer with water temperatures between 22°C and 23°C. Regarding the temperature of the sea, there is always a slight lag which means that while in spring outside temperatures will be warm, the sea will be colder. Therefore, spring is best to discover nature, see new blossoms and spot wildlife.

It’s easy to see why the Canary Islands is such a popular destination. With breath-taking landscape and the perfect year-round climate, whichever island you choose will be a holiday to remember.
