Wochenende in Kopenhagen: Sehenswürdigkeiten und Insider-Tipps

Hello everyone! 😊 I hope that you are healthy in these difficult times. Hopefully everything will soon return to normal and air traffic will steadily resume. As soon as it is safe enough for everyone to travel again, I highly recommend visiting Copenhagen. It's an affordable option for a weekend getaway with friends. Especially if you are traveling from Hamburg, there is a very cheap offer from Deutsche Bahn - € 29 for a one-way trip on the ICE / IC train. You can get there in just four and a half hours. If you are traveling with some friends I would not recommend booking a hotel as it could be quite expensive. Instead, I suggest an AirbnbBook the apartment and share the price. It's much cheaper per person. If the Airbnb apartment is equipped with a kitchen area, you can also shop in the local supermarket and cook at home. This saves you a lot of money when you go out, as Copenhagen's restaurants and cafes are quite expensive. The Netto supermarket is usually the preferred option here because of its fair prices and the similarity of the products to German products.

The top sights in Copenhagen

When in Copenhagen you can rent a bike to get around the city faster. If the weather allows it and you are ready, I highly recommend it. It is very safe to ride a bike in the city and the majority of people do it on a daily basis. My suggestion is to rent a bike from Copenhagen Bicycles , which is in the city center next to Nyhavn lies. Speaking of Nyhavn, this is my favorite district in Copenhagen. It's basically the colorful neighborhood of houses that you see in every typical Copenhagen photo. It is a well-known port area and it is wonderful to sit there and have a coffee on sunny days. Here you can also get on a boat that will propel you through the canals of Copenhagen. It takes about an hour and costs around 20 euros. But keep in mind that Denmark does not use the euro, but the Danish krone. 1 Danish krone is equivalent to around € 0.13.

Nyhavn

Another famous attraction are the Tivoli Gardens . This is an amusement park that was founded in 1843 and has become a national treasure and an international attraction. There are several amazing eateries and a small grocery market in Tivoli. It's also famous for its great architecture and the lovely little places around the park that you can explore. The fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen visited him several times, as did Walt Disney. Legend has it that Walt Disney even found the inspiration for his own Disney World here.

Next on the list is the Königsgarten , which is also located in the city center and is definitely worth a tour. It is the oldest park in Copenhagen and is ideal for a nice walk or a picnic. There you can visit Rosenborg Castle and explore its formal gardens. In the early spring, the lawn in front of the castle is overgrown with purple crocuses and offers a wonderful sight to take photos. We were lucky enough to visit Copenhagen by chance in the early spring of this year and it turned out to be our last trip before the corona pandemic .

Rosenborg Castle

Amalienborg Palace is very close by. It is a must for anyone interested in royal history and the life of the Danish royal family who still reside in the palace. The castle is not open to the public, but the view and the large Amalienborg square in front of the castle are worth seeing. We were instructed by our Airbnb hosts to visit Palace Square at 12:00 PM so we could see the change of the Royal Guard, which was a very interesting experience. The ceremony takes place daily, with the guard leaving Rosenborg Castle at 11.30am and marching to Amalienborg Castle. When the Queen is in the residence, the guard is accompanied by the Royal Guard band and they play 3 to 5 very festive songs.

If you are in Copenhagen, you absolutely have to do the StrøgetVisit the street - the famous shopping street in Denmark. It is a popular tourist attraction in the city center as it is one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe (1.1 km). The fact that Strøget was made pedestrian only in 1962 marked the beginning of a major change in Copenhagen's approach to urban life. After the success of this initiative, the city placed greater emphasis on pedestrian and bicycle access to the city. This approach, in turn, has become influential internationally. Strøget has a variety of stores, from budget-friendly chains to some of the world's most expensive brands like Channel, Dolce & Gabbana, etc. My all time favorite there was the Disney Store, since I'm a huge Disney fan. I spent about half an hour there and took about a hundred photos of the store's interior and its wares.

Disney items

On our way we also saw Frederiks Church , Rådhuspladsen (Town Hall Square) and the Royal Danish Theater . All of these attractions are in close proximity and can be visited on foot. However, if you want to see the popular Little Mermaid statue , you'll need to rent a bike or prepare for a longer walk. The Little Mermaid is a well-known sight in Copenhagen, but to be honest, it's not very spectacular. It's out of the city center, it takes a while to get there, and the area over there isn't very exciting. If you choose not to see them, you won't regret it.

What do you do in bad weather in Copenhagen?

When the weather in Copenhagen isn't cooperating, check out the acclaimed Danish Royal Library Den Sorte Diamant ("the black diamond"). Entry is free and this isn't just your average library. It is recognized worldwide for its architecture and panoramic views over the harbor. The library's name comes from its prismatic sharp edges and black marble slabs that resemble the features of a black diamond. The library is divided into 7 floors and offers not only reading rooms, but also a concert hall, exhibition galleries, a bookstore, a café and a restaurant.

If you are a fan of museums, I suggest you visit the Danish National Museum and the Danish Museum of Art and Design . Both have a lot to offer and are the kind of attractions that you could hang around for hours without even realizing it. The Copenhagen National Museum, for example, covers all eras of Denmark's past and has an interesting exhibition on Viking artifacts.

Where can you eat well in Copenhagen?

All of these sightseeing will make you hungry at some point. If you want to treat yourself to a nice dinner or a healthy snack, I can recommend the places listed below:

- Torvehallerne food market

Torvehallerne's food market is one of my favorite places in Copenhagen. What I like most is the variety of food and drinks - there are around 80 different stalls selling Danish delicacies, local vegetables, fresh fish, healthy food, cakes, other baked goods and much more. There is something for everybody.

- Brunch at Plant Power Food

I loved this place! Located on Fælledvej Street, it serves amazing breakfast and brunch meals in lovely little bowls and the food there is suitable for a plant-based and vegan lifestyle.

- Traditional Danish lunch and a beer at Øl og brød

Visit Øl og brød on Vesterbro for a typical Danish meal. Here you get the traditional smørrebrød with a locally paired beer. Smørrebrød is a so-called "open" sandwich, which usually consists of buttered bread topped with homemade pieces of fish or meat, cheese and other spreads. The way it's served is pretty fancy as you can see in the picture below.

Smørrebrød

These are some of the must-see places in Copenhagen. For me it was a great weekend trip to one of the most beautiful cultural capitals in Europe. I think Copenhagen has a character all of its own and I would love to go there again in the summer! I hope these tips are helpful to you 😊
