Lost or damaged luggage

If you lose your bag or your luggage gets damaged during the journey you can be inconvenienced. But if you know what to do right at the beginning, it will help to improve the chances of getting your belongings back or claim for the loss. Here’s a simple guide to help you navigate the process and protect your rights.

Step 1: Report the issue immediately

As soon as you realize your luggage is missing or damaged, head to the airline’s baggage service counter—usually found in the baggage claim area of the airport. Here’s what you need to do:

  • For lost luggage: This is where you need to notify the airline and fill out a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with the airline. This report is important in the search and recovery of your provide bag as and much so information should as you possible.
  • For damaged luggage: Inform the airline official about the damage and seek for a Damage Report. Some airlines may require you to sign a form at the time of filing the claim while others may allow the claims to be made through their website within a certain period.

Make sure to keep a copy of any reports or forms you complete, as you may need them later.

Step 2: Provide contact information

The airline will need your contact information and details about your bag. Be specific:

  • Bag description: Note down the colour, brand, type, and any identifying features of your luggage.
  • Contents list: While you don’t need to list everything, mention any essential or high-value items if prompted.
  • Contact info: Give your travel itinerary, contact phone, and an alternative contact in case your phone isn’t accessible.

This information will help the airline in tracking your bag and keeping you updated on its status.

Step 3: Check for reimbursement options

If your luggage is delayed or lost, airlines often cover some essentials, especially if you’re away from home. Be sure to clarify with the airline what’s reimbursable:

  • Essentials: Items like toiletries, basic clothing, and other necessities are often covered. However, keep all receipts, as you’ll need them for reimbursement.
  • Daily allowance: Some airlines may provide a daily allowance for expenses if your bag is delayed more than 24 hours. Check the airline’s policy, as allowances vary.

Be cautious with purchases—airlines will only reimburse reasonable expenses, so stick to essentials and avoid splurges.

Step 4: Tracking updates from with the airline

Most of the airlines offer services where you can able to track your baggage if it is delayed through their websites or mobile applications. These tools can be used to check on the status of your bag at regular intervals. In case of delayed information, it is advisable to contact the airline in order to be informed of the progress of the process.

Step 5: Know your rights for lost luggage compensation

If the airline declares your luggage officially lost (usually after 21 days), you may be eligible for compensation. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • International flights: Under the Montreal Convention, travelers can claim compensation for lost luggage on international flights up to approximately €1,400. This amount can cover both the bag itself and its contents.
  • Domestic flights in the eu: EU rules often provide similar compensation to the Montreal Convention for domestic flights within EU countries.
  • Claim requirements: Be prepared to provide a detailed list of your bag’s contents, estimated value, and purchase receipts if you have them.

Airlines sometimes offer a settlement amount. However, if it doesn’t cover your losses adequately, you can negotiate or seek additional support to secure fair compensation.

Step 6: Submit a claim for damaged luggage

The claims period for damaged luggage are quite stringent for most airlines and do not exceed seven days especially for international flights. Submit your claim along with images of the damaged area, repair quotes and a brief description of the damage. Some airlines may offer a repair service and if the repair is impossible you will be compensated.
