Flight delays and cancellations in September 2026
September may mark the end of the main summer holiday season, but that does not mean European airports suddenly become quiet. Throughout September 2026, millions of passengers continued to travel across Europe as holidaymakers returned home, travellers took advantage of the late-summer season, and airlines began transitioning towards their autumn schedules.
For passengers, that meant delays and cancellations did not disappear with August.
A disrupted flight can be more than an inconvenience. Under EU Regulation 261/2004, passengers may be entitled to compensation of up to €600 when a flight is significantly delayed or cancelled and the circumstances meet the relevant requirements.
Below, we have collected a selection of flights disrupted during September 2026. If your flight appears on the list, or you experienced a similar disruption during the month, it may be worth checking whether you are eligible for compensation.
In Germany, flight compensation claims can generally be pursued for up to three years, subject to the applicable limitation rules. So even though your September journey is already over, your opportunity to check the flight may not be.
Take a look at the flights below. A few minutes spent checking could tell you whether your disrupted journey may qualify for compensation.
Use our compensation calculator to find out in just a few clicks if you’re entitled to a payout.

If you were on one of these flights, it’s worth checking your case – you may be entitled to compensation.
What caused flight disruptions in September 2026?
September is a transitional month for European aviation. The intense summer peak begins to ease, but passenger demand remains high on many routes, particularly around popular Mediterranean destinations and major European hubs.
At the same time, airlines are still working with complex aircraft rotations. A delay earlier in the day can affect several flights afterwards, sometimes leaving passengers hundreds or even thousands of kilometres away dealing with the consequences.
Flight disruptions during September can be linked to a variety of factors, including:
- Busy airports and continued late-summer passenger demand
- Air traffic congestion and air traffic control restrictions
- Thunderstorms, strong winds and other adverse weather
- Aircraft arriving late from previous flights
- Tight turnaround and aircraft rotation schedules
- Ground handling, baggage or airport staffing problems
- Technical or operational issues
- Strikes and other aviation-sector disruptions
The exact cause matters.
An airline may describe a cancellation or delay as being caused by “operational reasons”, but that phrase alone does not determine whether compensation is payable. EU passenger rights depend on what actually caused the disruption and whether the circumstances fall within or outside the airline's responsibility.
That is why it is worth checking the individual flight rather than assuming that a delay or cancellation automatically qualifies — or automatically does not.
Can you claim for a September 2026 disrupted flight?
If your September trip ended with a long delay or cancellation, you may still have a valid claim.
Under EU Regulation 261/2004, compensation can reach €600 per passenger depending on factors including the flight distance, length of the arrival delay and reason for the disruption. Not every delayed or cancelled flight qualifies, particularly where extraordinary circumstances apply.
With MYFLYRIGHT, you can check whether your flight may be eligible and decide whether you want to pursue a claim.
- Check whether your disrupted flight may qualify
- No upfront payment is required
- Fees apply only if the claim is successfully enforced
- Flights taken for holidays, business trips and package holidays can potentially qualify
- A busy travel period by itself does not remove passenger rights. What matters is the individual disruption and the circumstances behind it.
If your September flight did not go according to plan, checking it now could tell you whether you have compensation waiting to be claimed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still claim compensation for a flight delayed in September 2026?
Potentially, yes. A September 2026 flight is recent, so there is generally still time to pursue an eligible claim. Whether compensation is due depends on factors including the route, arrival delay and cause of the disruption. For flights subject to German limitation rules, claims can generally be pursued for up to three years.
Which flights were disrupted in September 2026?
The list in this article contains a selection of flights that experienced disruption during September 2026. Inclusion in the list does not automatically mean that compensation is payable. Each flight needs to be assessed individually.
How much flight compensation could I receive?
Under EU Regulation 261/2004, eligible passengers can receive €250, €400 or €600 depending primarily on the flight distance and circumstances of the journey. For delays, passengers generally need to reach their final destination at least three hours late for monetary compensation to apply.
Does every delay of more than three hours qualify?
No. The length of the delay is only one part of the assessment. The reason behind the disruption also matters. For example, certain extraordinary circumstances outside an airline's control can mean that monetary compensation is not payable.
What if the airline says the delay was caused by operational reasons?
“Operational reasons” is a broad description rather than, by itself, a final determination of your compensation rights. The underlying cause of the disruption needs to be considered when assessing whether EU passenger compensation applies.
