Missed flight due to security delays: Who pays?

Ever feel like you're running through the airport? You reach on time and get through check-in and heads for security. However, you got a line of hundreds against you. And your boarding time? It is coming closer and closer.

By the time you reach your gate, it's closed. Your plane is still there, but you're not getting on.

So, who pays for your missed flight?

Unfortunately, that's not always enough to make the airline pay up. If you're running late due to security lines, airlines usually don't have to pay you compensation according to EU Regulation 261/2004. However, you could be entitled to special assistance, rebooking, and more.

Here's what you need to know before paying for another ticket.

Can you claim compensation for a missed flight?

The answer depends on why you missed your flight.

EU Regulation 261/2004 protects passengers in cases of flight cancellations, significant delays, and denied boarding. Depending on the circumstances and flight distance, compensation can reach €600.

Here the unfortunate truth is that if your flight departed on time as scheduled and you missed it regardless of how long the security line is, then no compensation under EU261 is due. Security doesn’t create a right to compensation.

Then again, it doesn’t mean every missed flight is treated the same way.

You reached the gate on time but were denied boarding

Ever done all the right things - went through security, arrived at your gate on time and had all your travel documents ready, but still got turned down for boarding by the airline? Then the connection broke somewhere.

This may qualify as denied boarding under Article 4 of Regulation 261/2004.

If the airline refuses boarding for operational reasons, rather than legitimate safety, security, health, or documentation concerns, you may be entitled to compensation of €250, €400, or €600, depending on the flight distance. You may also have the right to rebooking or a refund.

The important distinction is whether you reached the gate before the boarding deadline. Arriving while the aircraft is still parked doesn't necessarily mean you can actually board.

What if you missed a connecting flight?

Connecting flights might further complicate the matter.

Let's say, you are flying from Berlin to Madrid with a layover in Frankfurt. Your initial flight is punctual, but long security lines in Frankfurt make you miss the connection.

Even if both flights were booked under one reservation, an airport security delay doesn't automatically qualify you for compensation or free rebooking under EU261. The airline's ticket conditions and the circumstances of your missed connection will determine what assistance is available.

But there's another side to the story, if your first flight was delayed and that delay ended up causing you to miss your connecting flight.

For flights covered by EU261 and booked under a single reservation, an airline-caused missed connection may entitle you to compensation if you reach your final destination at least three hours late, provided the relevant legal conditions are met.

Our recommendation: Talk to the airline before you buy your next flight and tell them how you missed your connection. Ask for alternative flights and different rebooking opportunities where you can still make your original booking.

Can you complain to the airport about a security delay?

Yes. For missing your flight as a result of long security line lines, you can make a formal report to the airport operator.

Explain when you arrived, how long you waited, and whether the airport experienced technical problems, staff shortages, or other unusual disruptions.

You might also want to inquire if the airport has a reimbursement or compensation scheme for travelers who have been delayed through no fault of their own.

Furthermore, you need to understand that a complaint does not mean you will be paid back. It all depends on which national law is applicable, the reason for the delay, and if the airport may be held liable for the delay.

What should you do immediately after missing your flight?

Go to the service counter of your airline, they will help you rebook. You may get a different flight with a different airline, or a rebooking fee discount.

Hold on to your boarding pass, travel confirmation, and receipts for any expenses. Take photos of any delays in security lines and request a written statement from airport personnel.

All of this information can be incredibly helpful in an airport complaint, insurance claim, or when there is a possibility of claiming compensation.

Will travel insurance cover your missed flight?

It also depends on your policy. While many policies have benefits for missed departures or connections, other policies don't reimburse for airport security delays.

Review your coverage and reimbursement limits. If your flight is covered, your insurer may reimburse costs for your replacement flight, additional accommodation, and other applicable expenses.

How can you avoid missing a flight because of security?

Follow your airport's recommended arrival time and allow extra time during busy travel periods. For connecting flights, consider possible security checks, passport control, and terminal changes.

Fast-track security can help, but it doesn't guarantee you'll reach your gate on time. Always check your boarding deadline, which is usually earlier than the flight's departure time.
