Warning strikes at several airports: Travelers to expect delays

German airports on strike
On Monday morning (13.03.2023), warning strikes at several German airports caused considerable restrictions in air traffic. The trade union Verdi had called for the work stoppages to emphasize their demands for higher wages and better working conditions.
Affected airports included Frankfurt Airport, Munich Airport, Hamburg Airport, Hanover Airport and Stuttgart Airport. The strikes began at 5 a.m. and were expected to last all day. The union had announced that there would be significant restrictions on air traffic and that passengers should expect flight delays and flight cancellations.
Strike: Flight delays and flight cancellations
In fact, many flights were postponed or cancelled. At Frankfurt Airport, one of the largest airports in Europe, around 500 flights were cancelled. Numerous flights also had to be cancelled in Munich and Hamburg. Many passengers were affected by the restrictions and had to deal with delays and detour.
The Verdi trade union is demanding higher wages for airport workers. It argues that employees in the aviation industry have hardly benefited from the good economic situation in recent years. The union is calling for a collective agreement that provides for higher wages and better working conditions. The employers' side, on the other hand, rejects the union's demands. They argue that the airline industry has already been severely affected by the Corona pandemic and that higher wages and better working conditions would jeopardize the economic survival of the companies.
The warning strikes at airports are part of a nationwide wave of strikes organized by Verdi. There have already been warning strikes in public transport, retail and other sectors in recent weeks. With the strikes, the union wants to increase the pressure on the employers and achieve a better wage offer.
For travelers, the warning strike at airports means considerable restrictions and inconvenience. Passengers should be prepared for possible delays and flight cancellations and check the current status of their flight before traveling. Further warning strikes are also planned in various sectors in the coming weeks, which could lead to further restrictions in public life.
