Passenger rights: Early gate closure EU 2026

Time to board the plane and get to your gate. You arrive at the gate before your flight departs. The aircraft is already there but the door is shut, and the airline refuses to allow you to board.

Does that mean you're entitled to compensation?

Sometimes. The important detail isn't simply that the airport gate closed "early." Under current Passenger Rights rules, what matters is whether you presented yourself for the flight as required and why the airline refused to carry you.

Passenger Rights: when can an early gate closure matter?

EU Regulation 261/2004 covers denied boarding in certain circumstances. If you had a confirmed reservation, complied with the required check-in conditions and were refused boarding against your will without reasonable grounds, you may have rights under EU261.

This protection is not limited to overbooked flights. The Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that denied boarding can occur for operational reasons.

An early gate closure therefore deserves a closer look when, for example, you were at the gate within the time communicated by the airline but boarding had already been closed.

That alone isn't enough to determine we are owed a payment. Evidence counts.

Departure time isn't your boarding deadline

This is where passengers often get caught out. A flight scheduled for 14:00 doesn't mean you can arrive at the gate at 13:59. Airlines normally set separate check-in and boarding deadlines, and passengers are expected to follow them.

If the airline clearly told you to be at the gate by 13:30 and you arrived at 13:40, seeing the aircraft outside won't usually change the situation.

But what if your boarding pass, your airline app, says the gate closes at 13:30. And you get there at 13:20 and the gate has already been shut. Now that is different.

One issue we regularly see in claims is that the disagreement isn't really about whether the gate closed, it’s more about when the gate was closed and whether the passenger was actually there.

Could you receive up to 600 €?

If what happened legally qualifies as denied boarding under EU261, Article 7 currently provides compensation of:

250 € for flights of 1 500 km or less

400 € for certain flights over 1 500 km and flights between 1 500 and 3 500 km

600 € for other qualifying flights over 3 500 km

It also might have duties around reimbursement or rerouting, and, where relevant, treatment like meals or accommodation.

However, there are some exceptions. If you arrived late at the gate, if you didn't have the right travel documents or if boarding was refused for valid health and safety reasons, or for reasons of safety and security, the compensation rules for denied boarding may not apply.

Your strongest evidence may already be on your phone

Don't leave the airport with nothing except a memory of what happened. Take a screenshot of your boarding pass and airline app. Take a picture of the departure screen or closed gate. Save any messages about departure time or changing gates and ask airline staff why you could not board.

Keep receipts as well, for transportation, meals, lodging, or additional flights. A screenshot with a time indicator might be worth a thousand words you write weeks later.

What should you do next?

Start by asking the airline for the reason you were denied boarding and submit a claim if the circumstances appear to fall within EU261.

If the airline refuses it, don't assume the first reply necessarily closes the matter. The facts are - the announced final boarding time, when you arrived at the gate, and why you weren't allowed to board-should be verified.

You can also have the case reviewed by a flight compensation service such as MYFLYRIGHT, particularly when the airline and passenger disagree about what happened at the gate.

The bottom line

Is an airport gate closing before departure your fault? Not always. If you did everything that the airline asked you to do, arrived at the airport gates at the right time and was denied boarding without a valid reason, Passenger Rights under EU261 may protect you.

Keep the receipts rather than just paying the fare to replace the ticket and then erasing the memory. The difference between being "late for boarding" and being "denied boarding" can be worth up to €600.
